Proxy Anonymity Levels Explained — Transparent vs Anonymous vs Elite
Proxies are classified into three anonymity levels. Understanding them is critical for privacy.
Level 1: Transparent Proxy (No Privacy)
Forwards your real IP to the target server. The website knows you are using a proxy AND can see your real IP. Use for caching/filtering only — NOT for privacy.
Level 2: Anonymous Proxy (Moderate Privacy)
Hides your real IP but tells the server a proxy is being used. Good for general browsing and geo-unblocking.
Level 3: Elite / High Anonymous Proxy (Maximum Privacy)
The server cannot detect any proxy usage at all. Your connection looks like a normal direct connection. Essential for web scraping, bypassing strict geo-blocks, and maximum privacy.
How We Test Anonymity
Our Proxy Checker checks for proxy-identifying headers: HTTP_VIA, HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR, HTTP_PROXY_CONNECTION. Elite proxies send NONE of these.
Which Level to Choose?
- Privacy/Security: Always Elite
- Casual browsing: Anonymous is acceptable
- Never use Transparent for privacy
